Celebrating sexual and gender diversity at Austin Health
Today we hosted a number of LGBTIQ+ services in the Austin Tower foyer in celebration of sexual and gender diversity at Austin Health. These services included Mind Australia's Equality Centre, Victoria Police GLLOs, Transgender Victoria, Banyule City Council, Clare Headland with Your Community Health: Trans and Gender Diverse Health Care Initiative, Transgender Medical Research and Carers Victoria.
"We're strengthening our relationships with LGBTIQ+ services to help improve health outcomes for our community," says Rainbow Group Secretary, Stephanie Scane, who works at our Community Recovery Program.
Stephanie also adds that celebrations like this provides the LGBTIQ+ community with the opportunity to share their stories and feel heard.
"I transitioned while working at Austin Health and during this time I have been encouraged and supported by my colleagues. I feel accepted," says Clare Headland.
Victoria Police Acting Senior Sergeant, Con Matsamakis says that events like this help raise the visibility of LGBTIQ+ services within the local community.
"Events like this give the community confidence that we'll help them when they need us and that we'll keep them safe."
"I'm a patient of Austin Health's and my experience has been really good and everyone has treated me very well. It doesn't get better than that!" says Cathy Eccles, Board Secretary of Transgender Victoria.
Estelle Pelletier who is a Consumer Representative with our Rainbow Group was so happy to see so many people attend today's event and show their support for the LGBTIQ+ community.
"There are so many supportive people having conversations and teaching others about the LGBTIQ+ community. It's great."
