Celebrate and support Pride Month online this June (and all year round!)
Rebekah Trachsel grew up in the heartland of America in Cincinnati.
“I joined Austin Health last year, after living in Chicago, Mexico, and most recently Los Angeles. I’m on the search for the most authentic tacos in Melbourne,” she says.
“Pride to me means that I live my life openly as a lesbian woman. I’m so grateful for the Stonewall pioneers who started our fight for equality more than 50 years ago in America,” she says.
Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the riots held by members of the LGBTIQA+ community and allies against a police raid that took place at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969.
The Stonewall riots are considered to be an important turning point in the history of the LGBTIQA+ rights movement. In Australia, the first Sydney Mardi Gras was also held in June, in 1978.
“Women like Marsha P Johnson, who was at the forefront of the gay liberation movement, inspire me to never take for granted how far we’ve come nor forget how much further we need to go,” Rebekah says. A
fter joining Austin Health last year as Head of Donor Relations, Fundraising, Rebekah has had the opportunity to march with colleagues at the Midsumma Pride March this February, and support development of our first Diversity and Inclusion Plan.
“I’m especially grateful to be working on the Fundraising team, where my director and colleagues celebrate and support diversity,” Rebekah says.
The Diversity and Inclusion Plan will be launched later this year. Pride Month usually brings together large groups of people all around the world. This year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic has seen more than 220 pride celebrations cancelled, postponed or moved online.
Our Diversity and Inclusion team say that the COVID-19 pandemic is no reason not to celebrate our rainbow community. There are many ways you can celebrate and support this community either year round - or by joining a virtual Pride Month event:
- Ensure your team is inclusive and an ally to our rainbow community:
o Host training from Transgender Victoria to better support the needs of trans and gender diverse and LGBTIQA+ people.(Training is still going strong with COVID-19 – utilise this time to prioritise learning we all benefit from!)
o Offer time for staff to watch the movie THE DEATH AND LIFE OF MARSHA P. JOHNSON (2017) on Netflix, then hold a team discussion on learnings.
o Host a Pride morning tea where in lieu of purchasing food, each team member brings their snack or meal and contributes a gold coin or whatever amount they’re comfortable with towards a team donation to Switchboard, a non-profit that provides support to LBGTIQA+ people, their families and community.
- Download free pride backdrops to use in Zoom meetings with your family and friends
- Join the first digital Sydney Pride Festival, Love Stream. It runs from June 4-30 and will feature LGBTQIA entertainment, talks, documentaries, children’s story time, health and fitness, education, movie and TV recommendations and much more.
