The 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours List has officially recognised three people from Austin Health for their contribution to the community.

Professor Lindsay Grayson, Director of Infectious Diseases, and Associate Professor Michael Murray, Divisional Medical Director of Continued Care, Head of Geriatric Medicine and Medical Lead of Patient Flow at Austin Health, were honoured as Members (AM) of the General Division of the Order of Australia.

Both Professor Grayson and Associate Professor Murray were recognised for their 'Significant Service to Medicine' in the 2019 Honours List.

Austin Health CEO, Sue Shilbury, congratulated Lindsay and Michael on their achievement.

"Austin Health is lucky to have so many staff members who are leaders in their field and drive improvements to healthcare in Australia and around the world," Sue said.

"Lindsay has been instrumental in leading the work of the Infectious Diseases Department at Austin Health to improve hygiene in hospitals and has also used his position as the Director of Hand Hygiene Australia to increase awareness of the important role hand hygiene plays in managing the spread of infectious diseases.

"Michael has worked in geriatric care for almost 30 years and continues to educate and drive improvements in the care provided to older patients both in hospital and in residential care.

"On behalf of Austin Health, I congratulate both Lindsay and Michael on receiving this honour.

Austin Health volunteer, Mary McLure, was also recognised in this year's Honours List, receiving a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division.

"Mary has been a volunteer in our Emergency Department since 2003 and gives her time each week to support patients and their families in the Department," Sue said.

"She was recognised on Monday 'For service to the community through a range of roles' including her work as a volunteer with Austin Health for more than 15 years.

"We are very proud of the work our volunteers like Mary do to support the care we provide and it's fantastic to see her acknowledged in this way," Sue said.

Former Austin Health staff member, Dr Rodney Syme, was also honoured as Members (AM) of the General Division of the Order of Australia 'For significant service to social welfare initiatives, and to law reform' for his advocacy work linked to Voluntary Assisted Dying.
