Upcoming nursing careers information session
Alex Brigal fell in love with emergency care when she worked in a rural hospital in Western Australia and decided to advance her critical care skills when she returned to Melbourne.
She was encouraged by nurse educators and senior nursing staff to apply for post graduate studies which she completed in February this year at the Clinical Education Unit, specialising in Emergency Care.
"It was really valuable and rewarding," Alex says.
"My nursing has changed, my critical assessment skills have advanced and I'm able to work autonomously and provide urgent lifesaving care to crucial patients.
"It's an environment where I'm challenged and can learn from experienced and highly skilled nurses.
"It's made me more confident as a nurse."
The Clinical Nursing Education team (CNE) will hold an information session on Post Graduate and Foundation Nursing Program career opportunities on Wednesday 31 July.
Clinical Educator and Coordinator of the Emergency Post Graduate course, Yasmin Ellis, says her aim is to build the knowledge and confidence of the students.
"We have the best nurses at Austin Health and it's because we work in a supportive environment and provide our people with opportunities to learn and grow," she says.
"I find lots of satisfaction in seeing past students being totally independent.
"I'll walk in to ask if they need help with a patient and they'll tell me, 'I've got this'."
The Post Graduate and Foundation Nursing Program information session will be held on Wednesday 31 July from 3.30pm to 5.30pm in the Clinical Education unit on Level 4, Austin Tower.
Nurses with one year of acute experience are encouraged to attend.
